Departing the Shire – July 2-5, 2018

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” -Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

This was “Jack and Pack Week”. Monday and Tuesday I focused on getting Jack’s paperwork squared away. More hoops to jump through. Lots of office visits in three different cities. A goodly stack of paperwork. U.S., Germany, E.U., and Poland regulations to make sure we’re in compliance with. Multiple timelines that all have to jive. And the paperwork is only good for ten days from completion.

But Jack was a trooper. He barely flinched when he was microchipped in VA. He made a bunch of friends in southern Georgia.

There was more Catan.

Jack got to practice wearing his backpack.

We re-sorted everything, packed, and re-packed. It was exhausting.

Independence Day caught us sleeping in, and taking it easy. Margaret made a big breakfast and 4th-of-July fare like corn on the cob (“Haven, you don’t just grab someone else’s cobs!”), hotdogs, and fresh cole-slaw.

Which brings us to this morning, July 5, 2018.
The biggest hurdle was getting ourselves, the dog, the horkin’-big dog crate,

and all of this:

into this:

We did it! (Cue the Dora the Explorer music.)

Margaret sent us on our way with prayer. (Thanks for everything, Mom/Nannie/Margaret! We love you!)

And away we went!

Had dinner with Don Williams and Heather and Caleb Ottman. 😀 But didn’t get any pictures.

Hanging out at a Dr. Don’s for the night.
