Rome Part II and Ostia Antica – 21-23 February, 2019

Roman Forum

One of our favorite things to do was to wander around. We came across the neatest places and things by accident!

Also… Gelato!!!

Below: St. Peter’s Basilica (front). The place is enormous and beautiful. There’s so much history and art that a person would be hard pressed to discover the meaning of it all in a lifetime.

Below: statue of Giordano Bruno, who was burned alive in 1600 on this exact spot in Campo di Fiori. He was a philosopher in disagreement with the Pope at the time. Campo di Fiori was the site of public executions back in the day.

Below: On our way back to the hotel, annora and I passed by this place. Come to find out, this is where Julius Ceasar was murdered on the Ides of March, 44BC. Here’s a link to read more.

Our last full day in Rome we took a day trip to Ostia Antica. Y’all. It was incredible.

We enjoyed wandering around the ancient city that is still undergoing excavation. There’s a lot here to discover away from the crowds of Rome.

Annora found an underground entry to one of the many tombs in the necropolis. The pictures below are what was inside.

Just wandering down the streets and through the many buildings was a treat!

And afterwards? We absolutely had to dip our toes into the Mediterranean. Annora said, “I’ve been drawing this sea on maps and reading about things that happened here my whole life!”

Above: Proof we actually were touching the Mediterranean Sea.

Below: Next day, we hopped the train to Venice to visit my cousin and his family for a day before heading home to Poland.
