Berlin to Rome – 16-17 February 2019

After a concert in Łódź, Poland, Annora and I traversed by train to Berlin. We were on our way to Rome for a meet-up with some American friends, and to see the sights. After leaving Berlin a few hours previous and working through a bunch of Annora’s schoolwork, we pulled into Frankfurt at midnight-ish. Our next train left at 2:48AM. 😅

McDonald’s. There was a McDonald’s open! We grabbed a snack, sat down, and worked on Algebra.

Finally, we hopped on our train, bound for Basel, Switzerland. So tired. So very tired.

We tried to get some sleep. We got a few winks in. Arrived in Basel and left again around 6:30 AM.

Highlight of the train trip? Seeing the sunrise in the Alps between Basel, Switzerland and Milan, Italy.

… And eating breakfast in the first class dining car. 😉

Italy!

Not sure which lake this was (I’m guessing Lago Maggiore), but we traveled along its edge for quite a ways. Wouldn’t mind vacationing there some day, for sure!

Found our train in Milan easy-peasy.

On this speedy guy, we made it to Rome in about three hours!

Above: Serendipity. Livy’s The Early History of Rome was part of Annora’s assigned reading from one of her classes.

These are the outside doors to the building wherein our hotel was.

We absolutely crashed once we got into the hotel. So tired. Our friends had been in Rome a few days already, leading a school trip. We met up and had supper with them then went back to the hotel to sleep. We didn’t set an alarm.

The train trip was one of those unforgettable journeys, but we both wished we could have taken our time a bit more with at least one multi-day stop along the way. (I still say two stops would be better.) But the Eurail Passes were super! We’d buy them again in a heartbeat! On the way to Rome, we only used up two out of our five days.

  1. When I saw Phaedra Calloway, your friends must have been from New Covenant here in L’burg. We enjoy your picture travelogue of your trip from Poland to Rome. Thanks for sharing! Sue Siko
